When you hire a plumber, your plumbing isn’t the only thing at stake. Not only are you letting a man into your home, but you’re also allowing him to be around your family. Make sure you do your homework and get the right person for the job. Here are five important characteristics to look for in a local plumber:

1. Knowledge

If nothing else, you want a knowledgeable plumber. It’s usually a good indication of all the following characteristics combined, even if it slightly difficult to properly assess and measure. Do your best to find a plumber knowledgeable in the subject area of your particular issue. This can be accomplished by asking lots of questions about risks, potential causes of the problem, etc..

2. Experience

There is no substitute for experience. You want your plumber to be able to say, “Been there, done that.” That means that he knows exactly what the problem is, knows how to fix it, and has personally fixed it before. In your search for a good local plumber, look for plumbers with at least 5 years of experience. They have the best chance of solving the problem right the first time.

3. Reputable

A reputable plumber cannot be underestimated. If he himself doesn’t know how to solve the problem, he will find someone else who can. Beyond skills though, you also want a courteous plumber. Manners and civility say a lot about a man’s character, and you only want men of good character in your home.

4. Reliable

Reliability is the key to reducing frustration. Nothing is worse than taking time off work to be at home when the plumber comes only to wait for hours without him showing up. The best way to find reliable plumbers is to talk to friends and family, and pay particular attention to any other reviews you can find.

5. Licensed

Although not essential in today’s marketplace, a licensed plumber is always a plus. If possible, choose a licensed plumber. However, if you find someone that meets the last four qualities and yet is unlicensed, don’t sweat it. Probability says you’ll still be well taken care of.

Plumbers that have all five of these qualities are few and far between. If you’re having a hard time finding information, try talking to plumbers on the phone and asking questions. Also, look online for ratings and reviews; these are excellent indicators of a plumber’s caliber.

I like that you suggested finding a plumber with at least 5 years of experience. I have been looking at different plumbers, but I don't know how to choose one. I can see how finding one with lots of problem solving experience, would help me make a decision. http://www.garabedianplumbing.com/plumbing reply

I like that you talked about choosing a plumber that is courteous. I have been looking for a plumber to come work on my shower, but I don't know how to choose one. I can see how it would be nice to find one that is polite, so my family doesn't get offended while the plumber is working. http://mrrooter.com/columbia-missouri/jefferson-city reply

We have a little leak under our kitchen sink, and we need to have it checked out. I like what you said about finding someone who is reliable. I don't want to have to sit around waiting for a plumber to show up. I want someone who will keep their word. http://www.garrettplumbinginc.com reply

We have some issues happening in our home and we really need to find a plumber, but we want a good one that we can trust. That is a great idea to check if they are licensed or not first. We wouldn't want them to not have a license and something bad happens at home. Thanks for the tips! http://moonvalleyplumbing.com/ reply

My wife and I are wanting to renovate our bathroom, but we aren't sure where to start when it comes to installing the new pipes and fixtures. I like that you suggest hiring a plumber who is licensed even though it probably isn't necessary. this would put my mind at ease if something was broken during the job, so I'll be sure to ask about this. Thanks for sharing! http://www.martechplumbing.com.au/services reply

It's interesting that you talked about finding a plumber that always shows up when he says he will. I have been looking for someone to come install a new water heater in my house. I can see how it would be nice to find someone that is always on time. That way I the job will be done by the time I need it to be. http://www.assuredplumbing.com/now-services reply
